VIDEO: Suspected smash-and-grabbers caught on camera

Camera frightens away suspect.

Disturbing video footage of what seems to be the prelude to a smash-and-grab incident has surfaced on social media.

The incident takes place early in the morning in peak hour traffic at the intersection on Gordon Road just before the bridge. A man is seen climbing over the barrier of the embankment and then brazenly starts looking into the windows of vehicles waiting for the traffic light to turn green. Shortly afterwards a second man climbs over the barrier and then does the same. At first it appears that the men do not see anything valuable but at the last moment something in the vehicle from which the footage is being taken attracts one of the men’s attention and he purposefully starts moving to the car. The camera operator then turns the camera directly on the suspect and when he sees this he quickly turns around to hide his identity.

Captain Lydia Dikolomela of Florida police says they are aware that this is a smash-and-grab hot spot and due to policing the problem did decrease but said she would investigate how many cases have been opened in the past month. She also says that it is the typical modus operandi of these criminals to hide on the embankment next to the intersection and that motorists should be vigilant.
