Spin for sight

LITTLE FALLS – Local optometrists and Retina South Africa set their sights on spinning for a goal.

Vision Works Optometry from Lifestyle Crossing in Little Falls recently teamed up with Retina South Africa in a spin-a-thon race to raise funds for retinal stem cell research.

“This was our first time hosting this event,” said Retina SA spokesperson, Mandy Burns. “What we are trying to do is to get Virgin Active to add us to their national calendar so we can host an annual Spin For Sight fundraiser every November at every Virgin Active Club across the country.”

Burns explained that proceeds from the event will go to Retina SA in order for them to contribute to stem cell research which seeks to find a cure for various eye disorders like retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration and allied retinal conditions.

Sayuri Chetty, optometrist at Vision Works, reiterated that Spin for Sight was more than a fundraiser, as it aims to raise awareness of the many retinal diseases out there and also how to optimise eye care.

“We’re trying to give to a good cause,” stated Chetty. “Retina SA does so much good work in the fight against blindness.”

Vision Works has also initiated the Love your Eyes campaign and they are currently offering eye tests at an unbelievable R90 per test. “It’s our way of giving back to our community,” Chetty concluded.
