Building site upsets residents
LITTLE FALLS - Increasing number of vagrants causes residents to worry about safety in the suburb.
A closed down building site in Little Falls has residents worried about their safety in the area.
The site is located next to the Cascades Centre in Cascades Road across the Parkhurst Residential Complex.
Parkhurst chairperson Stan Macintosh expressed his concerns about the building, as it poses certain safety threats to residents in houses and complexes close to the site.
He said, “The building site is not the problem, but everything that goes with it, creates problems for residents in the area.”
According to Macintosh, the first problem is vagrants showing up and standing in front of the building site’s gate, looking for work. “It normally occurs early in the mornings when the builder, who also lives on the site, opens up the gate and chooses a couple of workers to come and help him with the construction during the day.”
The second problem is that the spruit runs from the upper side of the site, and the water then flows into the two dams located inside the complex park and relaxation area. “The issue is that all of the dust and sand goes into the river, and it flows into our dam which is only two metres deep.”
An onsite meeting was held between Macintosh and the Ward 97 councillor Jaco Engelbrecht and various stakeholders to discuss what needs to be done about the situation.
Engelbrecht said that the vagrants are a safety threat and mentioned that he would investigate the matter to find a solution to the problem.
The owner of the land was unavailable for comment at the time of going to print.
