Spending Human Rights Day running the 5k Freedom Run

The run was a heap of fun for all who took part.

Approximately 100 runners braved the early morning chill on Human Rights Day to partake in the 5k Freedom Run along the usual Ruimsig parkrun route.

The organisers of the Ruimsig parkrun initiated the event, but it was not an official parkrun. It was simply a means of keeping people active on a public holiday. The chill of the early morning as we edge closer to winter certainly made it a bit difficult for the runners to stretch and loosen up, especially on a Thursday.

However, this didn’t stop the runners from hopping out of bed bright and early to set off on the run at 7am which, because it was unofficial, had no volunteers and officials to oversee proceedings. This added to the friendly, fun, ‘just do it’ vibe among the runners as some set off on a mission for a good time on their run while others simply enjoyed the walk with their little ones and pets.

Much like a usual parkrun, some runners finished pretty quickly while others took their time and enjoyed the beautiful haze around Ruimsig Stadium as the sun rose above the distant hills and reflected off the dam. Some of the runners hung around afterwards and convened for breakfast to regain the calories they’d burnt before heading off to enjoy Human Rights Day with their loved ones.
