CoJ firemen honoured for their bravery

The heroic deeds of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) firefighters who battled a deadly building fire last year were honoured during the EMS Bravery Awards on Monday, 28 January.
This moving ceremony, which was attended by CoJ Mayor Herman Mashaba and MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, was held at the Florida Fire Station where the firemen received their tokens of appreciation in the form of Medals of Valour.

The devastating inferno that broke out at the Gauteng Department of Health office building (Bank of Lisbon) in September last year, resulted in the deaths of three firemen, Khathutshelo Muedi, Mduduzi Ndlovu, and Simphiwe Moropana, and caused serious injuries to other firefighters who had to be hospitalised amid the disaster.
The families of the deceased trio were part of the ceremony and received the medals on behalf of their fallen loved ones.
Following the fire, safety and shortage of resources in the fire department were thrown into the spotlight by frustrated workers who spoke to the media, some on the condition of anonymity.

These reports prompted the City to launch a series of investigations, both internal and external. The City indicated they are waiting for the conclusion of the report with recommendations.
