Neighbours’ action helps contain fierce blaze
“On the day I got a call from the neighbour telling me the cabin which used by our domestic worker was on fire,” Maxine recalled.
The Jordaan family is among the many residents who will forever be grateful to their neighbours.
This after their neighbours assisted in putting out a fire that wreaked havoc at the property’s log cabin in Ruimsig on 28 September, in broad daylight.
Although an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the blaze, Maxine Jordaan was grateful that only replaceable items were destroyed, and that no humans, or her beloved pets, were harmed.
“On the day, I got a call from the neighbour telling me the cabin, which was used by our domestic worker, was on fire,” Maxine recalled.
“She then sent me a video and told me she had taken the pets and called for emergency assistance,” she added.
According to Maxine, the fire was noticed by the domestic worker after she returned to the cabin after doing some chores in the main house. “When she went to fetch her cellphone charger in the cabin, she saw thick smoke as she opened the door,” she explained.
She said the neighbours and DMS Security tried their best to contain the fire from spreading to the main house and other neighbouring properties. “The neighbours tried to use the hosepipe to put the fire out but the pressure was too low. When my daughter arrived, she suggested they use water from the pool, which eventually did the job,” she went on.
Maxine and her husband Derik thanked the neighbours for their amazing efforts. “Pierre and Robbin Greve and Surita and Lee Wacker are among the many amazing neighbours that I thank for their outstanding deed. These include DMS, the gardeners and domestic workers that came out in numbers to help,” she concluded.
