Potjie fundraiser helps send Cobras to Mauritius

Ruimsig – Music, rugby and potjiekos make for a great family afternoon and fundraising affair.

The Hole in One Boutique Hotel and Conference Centre held a fundraiser for the Cobra Sevens Rugby Club to send them to Mauritius.

The event, held on 5 August, saw businesses battle for the title of King of the Potjie 2017, and families gather for a day of food and entertainment. Individuals could watch the Super Rugby Final on the various screens provided by the hotel or listen to the live music and watch the Battle of the Bands competition.

The Cobra Sevens received the proceeds from the bowls of potjiekos sold and from several raffles. The team is fundraising to send 12 boys to Mauritius for the AfrAsia International Sevens Tournament in October. Last year the team went and won the Plate final, whereas this year they hope to win the Cup final.

Father of a Cobra Sevens player, Gavin Lindsay, said the tournament is great exposure for the boys as from this tournament they could be chosen to join an elite ‘dream team’ and compete in Dubai. “Sevens rugby is really a dynamic sport as you need all-rounded players. You need to be strong and fast. It is a sport that is growing and the boys are very excited to go and be a part of the tournament,” Gavin said.

Everyone enjoyed the day around the potjie pot, watching the rugby and the entertainment. Itec Connect East, the current main sponsor of the Cobra Sevens, was awarded the title of Potjie King.

The Cobra Sevens will continue fundraising through various events and a raffle for a two-night stay at the five star Beck Safari Lodge, which will be drawn in September.
