Wrapped in silk and off the ground

LASER PARK – Aerial dancing up high in the sky and loving every minute of it.

Dance in all its forms and genres is engendering. The skill and passion that goes into crafting this art is one that takes dedication. Aerial dance is slowly becoming a new phenomenon in South Africa.

Co-owners of Sky Dance Studio, Mari Theron and Michelle Hutchinson have opened a studio that is sure to uplift the mood of any dancer. This form of art is adapted from circus acts of using the trapeze and some rope skills. Theron, with her background in gymnastics and Hutchinson, with her background in pole dance, decided to get together and open up a studio that would cater to both of their skills and try something experimental.

The aerialists vehemently believe that this type of dance can be done by anybody with any body type. “Anyone can honestly do this, with consistency and dedication you could see yourself achieving something you saw to be daunting,” said Hutchinson.

Theron said that she was inspired by a performance she once saw singer/songwriter Pink do in one of her performances. “We started to teach aerial dance from the age of 12,” said Theron. She added that it took some years until she found a studio that catered to need

They went on to explain that like any skill, this form of dance is sustained through the development stage and from there building confidence progressively. The pair also divulged that there are not many studios that offer aerial dance with few spread throughout the provinces. “This form of dance is slowly developing in mainstream” said Theron.

At their studio, they have classes for aerial skills, lyra and static trapeze. Hutchinson concluded that though this dance form may defy reason, it can be done.
