Warning: Roadside robberies are on the rise in Florida

Members of the community are being urged not to ask for lifts from strangers or to pick up hitchhikers as it is very dangerous.

Florida Police have issued a warning to motorists not to respond to other motorists or pedestrians indicating that something is wrong with their vehicle.

“The complainant was driving when a Silver Polo with three male occupants bumped his car. He stopped to have look at his car and they also stopped, acting as if they wanted to negotiate with him on the damage. However, one of them threatened him with a firearm and took his cellphone and money,” said Sergeant Mpho More, the spokesperson at the Florida Police Station.

“We would like to sensitise the community to be observant of their surroundings at all times and to avoid quiet or dark streets,” she added.

In a separate incident, a woman was robbed of her luggage and cellphone on Main Reef Road.

“Four male occupants in a red Golf offered her a lift, but when they arrived at Robert Street next to the dumping site, one of them took out a knife and robbed the complainant,” said Mpho.

Members of the community are being urged not to ask for lifts from strangers or to pick up hitchhikers as it is very dangerous to do so.
