Seniors’ serenity disturbed with jubilance

The scarcity of outreach programmes at Serenity Haven Frailcare Centre was turned around recently when Letterland Educare and Aftercare Centre paid the seniors a visit.

The Discovery-based centre was packed with little ones on Tuesday, 19 March, as the kiddies hosted a special high tea for the oldies residing on the property.

The principal of the school, Brownwyn Kassen, told the Record why she chose the care centre. “One of our school’s shared values is taking care of others and being humbled, so we decided to visit the home since it has not had any outreach programmes lately.”

“The aim was to bring the children just to share the day because I do believe that there is a similarity between younger children below the age of eight and the senior citizens – you would be amazed by the breadth of the communications they sit and have,” she explained.

Part of the visit, according to Brownyn, was to teach the children about community awareness – helping those who are less fortunate. Although the care centre is not less fortunate, she said that the elderly do seek company at times.

Serenity Haven was founded five years ago to take care of and accommodate frail, injured, deaf and blind senior citizens, as well as those with other illnesses.

George Mouton, who was grateful for the splendid event, encouraged other institutions to also reach out to them. “We would like to have more events such as this happening in our care centre. We are not government funded and would appreciate funding and donations from them as well as the corporates,” he pleaded.
