Lions provide comfort for children with cancer

The comfort packs were handed over at Choc

Members of the various Lions Clubs lived up to their motto – We Serve – during their recent visit to the Choc House in Saxonwold.

Sandy van Heerden, the District Chairman for Public Relations, explained, “One of our Pillars of Service is Paediatric Cancer, and we decided to do something that will help make a difference in the lives of children with cancer.”

She said that they packed 200 comfort kits, which were handed over to Denise-Ann from the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (Choc) who will ensure that they are distributed to the children staying at one of the Choc houses and undergoing treatment.

“The comfort kits contain everything a child will need when going to hospital for treatment, including a small blanket, a beanie, aqueous cream, lip balm, a face cloth, soap, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a colouring book and crayons or another small, washable toy,” said Sandy.

Sandy added that a Certificate of Appreciation was also presented to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cunningham Lindsay, Ken McLean, to thank the company for their generous contribution to this project.

The Lions have also committed to setting up an indoor/ outdoor play area, with a sensory garden, at the Choc house in Soweto early next year.

Sandy concluded by saying, “One of the purposes of Lions Clubs is to encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward. We also encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours.”
