On at least three different days within the last two or three weeks different groups of men have been arriving outside our home and demanding access to maintain the electricity meter.
These men have almost all arrived in unmarked white bakkies, two of them in small Nissan-type vehicles, except the latest (last Friday), who arrived in what looked like a brand-new white double-cab 4×4-type bakkie.
They were also all holding some documents, some even had name tags on their overalls. All of them wore those bright yellow reflective vests as well. The two guys last Friday were very aggressive – they arrived without warning (which is irregular and unlawful) and were shouting “Hello” as if they knew my wife and my sister were at home. Thank goodness our dog was barking loudly at these men.
What is scary is the fact that these men seemed unworried, even about our dog. We watched them from inside our house and noticed they were attempting to break into our property by fiddling with the lock on the gate.
I would love to hear from City Power as to what is going on. How is it possible that these so-called contractors think they may enter anyone’s private property without the owner or resident being given a letter to arrange a date and time for any of the people they are employing to do checks and so-called maintenance of our pre-paid electricity meter when we have not reported any problems with our meter?
Something fishy is going on, because I do not see these men going to other houses in our area to do maintenance. It could be that somebody at the City Power offices is targeting our home, or that these so-called contractors are simply dangerous criminals trying to find their way into our home because we are elderly people.
The West Rand has had a plague of these people, all of whom, according to the local newspapers, are criminals. People need the help of the police to catch these men and arrest them not only for intimidation, but also for being aggressive and rude.
In all of these cases, there been two men in each of these unmarked bakkies.
The problem is – why and how are these men not caught and arrested by the police vehicles that patrol our area?
