Showing solidarity with those affected by Cancer, the CANSA Shavathon took place this past weekend.
The fundraising event was held at various malls in the West Rand including Westgate Mall.
Losing hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy so shaving the head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors. Colouring your hair or paying a bail out fee has become options for those who prefer not to shave on the day.
Marketing Manager of Westgate Mall Dean Campbell was one of the first in line to take the plunge and shave his hair. He said that this year, it was not about giving Cansa free space but giving to the community.
“It’s about Westgate wanting to help the community and personally getting involved in the initiative,” he said.
Sausage Saloon were the food and drinks sponsors of the event. Operations Manager Andre Laverman and store owner Michael Hugo decided to colour their hair and show their support for cancer victims.
“We need to be part of the community and this is a good cause to support,” they said.
Angela Woolridge from Rangepark Ridge decided to shave her long locks all in support of cancer.
“I have friends who have been affected by cancer, whether it be friends who have gone through it themselves or friends who have lost loved ones to cance. So this is my way of showing support to them,” said Angela.
She was accompanied by her husband Graham who also shaved his hair off for the good cause.
Many more lined up to have their heads shaved or coloured to raise funds, from little boys and girls to adults all in support of CANSA.
