Witpoortjie woman electrocuted during storm

A young woman was electrocuted at work during the electrical storm in Witpoortjie on Thursday.

Following the storm in Witpoortjie on the afternoon of Thursday 7 November a woman had to be taken to hospital after lightning had struck a house.

The woman, believed to be in her twenties, was transported to the Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital following a strike of lightning to the house in which she was working. A business is said to be run from the property. Of the two women who were inside the house at the time, the former suffered mild electrocution while the latter (believed to be in her forties) was traumatised by the experience.

According to ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson, paramedics were called out to the scene “where the young woman was suffering symptoms of possible mild electrocution”.

“Fortunately she was in a stable condition,” Jackson explained, saying that the woman was thoroughly assessed and transported to hospital.

“Despite the older woman being slightly traumatised, it was agreed that she would go to hospital at a later stage, should the need arise.”

Paramedics found no visible abnormalities when assessing the woman.

Jackson reiterates the dangers of lightning despite “the beautiful Highveld weather”.

“Be vigilant about your surroundings when an electrical storm hits your area.”

She warns people to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed during an electrical storm.

“Should you be travelling at the time, don’t park under a tree until it’s over,” she explained. “People should travel home normally and safely.”
