Roodepoort golfers selected for SA team

Golfers selected to compete in upcoming World Tournament.

Two amateur golfers from Roodepoort, Tony Uys and Ricardo Ferreira are a step closer to playing for Team South Africa at the 19th Amateur World Golfers Championship this October.

Tony qualified after finishing second in the 16 to 20 flighting, and Ricardo after finishing first in the 21 to 25 flighting during the Gauteng elimination round at Randpark Golf Club.

“I love playing the game and I love competition, that’s what keeps me coming back,” says Tony, who runs his own business and returned to the competition for the second time after an unsuccessful attempt to qualify last year.

Ricardo, a sales consultant and avid golfer for the past three years says, “After seeing the competition on Supersport last year, I set myself a goal to enter and make Team SA.

“So far it has been an awesome experience; I just wish it wasn’t only played once a year.”

The competition will get slightly tougher for Tony and Ricardo in the next stage, as they compete for the top two spots to qualify for a place in Team South Africa one and two.

“The stakes are high with 75 regional winners this year vying for a coveted opportunity to play in the World Final and compete against amateur golfers from all over the world in October.

“We wish Tony and Ricardo the best of luck at they prepare to take to the fairways and greens once more and put their skills to the test to earn the Team SA blazer,” said Craig Clay-Smith, spokesperson for World Golf Events South Africa, the SA event owners and organisers.
