On this day in 1969, O’Shea Jackson, popularly known as Ice Cube, was born.
He is best known for being a rapper; however, he is also a writer, businessman and actor.
Ice Cube was a member of the hip hop group C.I.A., and that is where he gained popularity. The group later disbanded and he joined Dr. Dre and Eazy E, in a group called N.W.A. He was the songwriter and performer, and was dubbed one of the founding artists of gangsta rap, pushing the boundaries of lyrical content in mainstream popular music, as well as visual imagery in music videos.
In 1989, he embarked on a solo career. Two of his songs attained platinum certification in the United States.
Among other things, he transitioned into film, where his popularity was further enhanced by his starring role in Boyz n the Hood.
As a businessman, Ice Cube founded a clothing line, Solo by Cube, and co-founded the professional 3-on-3 basketball league, Big3, with entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz. This league features both retired and active NBA players.
