Series of accidents results in calls for four-way stop

The residents have demanded that the intersection be turned into a four-way stop.

The two accidents that took place in a space of one week at the General Pienaar Avenue and Ham Street intersection have raised concerns among the residents of Witpoortjie.

On 23 April, three vehicles collided at the intersection, leaving a number of school children injured. Another collision took place on 30 April, resulting in a youngster suffering severe head injuries.

The residents have demanded that the intersection should be turned into a four-way stop to minimise the risks in what is rapidly becoming an accident hot spot.

The Roodepoort Record contacted the local ward councillor, Rene Benjamin, for comment on this alarming matter.

Benjamin said, “Accidents occur because of motorists’ reckless and bad driving habits and this unfortunate behaviour causes injuries to innocent victims. Roads do not cause accidents. Even on roads where speed calming measures have been introduced, drivers speed up and continue to ignore the rules of the road”.

Benjamin confirmed that she had already engaged with the Johannesburg Roads Agency on the matter and said the Chief Inspector had visited the site on 3 May. Her team will be meeting with the Chief Inspector to discuss the best possible options for the intersection.

Feedback from the meeting will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
