Black Eagles’ behaviour suggests a new eaglet is on its way

There is a strong possibility that Makatsa has laid her first egg

The Black Eagles have had lots to do in the past few months, including having to say goodbye to their eaglet, Ithemba.

The pair, Thulane and Makatsa, have had a good time relaxing and preparing for their next 44-day incubation period, which is just as well, as there is a strong possibility that Makatsa has already laid her first egg.

The members of the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) spend a lot of their time monitoring the behaviour of the eagles, and as a result of recent observations, feel pretty confident that the first egg has been laid.

Johan van den Berg (photographer and observer) said, “I suspect that the first egg has been laid, according to my observation of the pair’s behaviour.” He is also inclined to think that the egg was laid in the past two or three days.

“But, because the nest is situated in a very awkward position, it is almost impossible to see inside it. The monitors will continue to keep a very close eye on the developments around the pair, hoping for yet another successful breeding season,” Johan concluded.
