#IMadeMyMark – Elderly citizens eager to vote

The 71-year-old Pat Moodliar explained his reasons for going to the polls on Election Day.

As the nation prepares to go the polls on 8 May, the elderly citizens of Roodepoort expressed their views about voting.

Although some South Africans are divided about whether to make their mark or not, two local senior citizens, Chrissie ton Krooden and Pat Moodliar, from a cancer awareness group called The Chatroom, believe that voting is crucial and encouraged others to turn out and vote.

The 71-year-old Pat explained his reasons for going to the polls on Election Day. “I started voting in 1994 and believe it’s necessary to vote because it’s a constitutional right,” he said.

He went on to say, “We have to vote in order to get the right people to the right positions to get the problems solved,” and expects the masses to participate on the day.

Fifty-nine-year-old Chrissie implied that the future of the country relied on elections. “We must make our crosses on Election Day for the growth, future and unity of our country,” she said. However, she criticised those who choose not to vote and then complain years down the line.

“What makes me upset is people who complain a lot and never vote. I think you shouldn’t have a say if you do not want to vote,” she said.
