The delays in re-opening the Roodepoort Library are inconveniencing the community and school learners.
Mohamed Darsot, who is part of the Committee of Users at the library, stated that the library was closed on 27 March last year for renovation but the project is taking longer than it should.
According to him, the Director of Libraries communicated that the library would re-open in September but September has passed and it’s still not open.
“The library has been closed for a year and a half, and the delay is a huge inconvenience to the public and school learners, especially because it’s nearing exam time.
The public and students are becoming uneasy, agitated and impatient,” Mohamed said.
The Record approached Ward 84 councillor, Gert Niemand, for comment. He explained that one of the delays was the fact that the library is a heritage site and the City of Johannesburg Heritage Department had to get involved with the renovations, which hindered progress. However, all is in order now, the renovations are done, and the library will soon re-open.
