#NewBlood campaign well under way, but blood level target still to be met
As of 21 March, the South African National Blood Service had only reached 7.2 per cent of its goal of 4 500 units.
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) set a target of 4 500 units of blood for its #NewBlood campaign.
At the time of writing, only the statistics up to 21 March were available, indicating that a mere 325 units had been collected.
The levels are expected to have increased since, as the SANBS held several blood drives around the country on Human Rights Day, including one on Vilakazi Street, where both Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the late Nelson Mandela once lived.
SANBS called on both first-time donors as well as lapsed donors, especially those with Group O blood, to donate their blood.
First-time donors are reminded that they are required to produce identification prior to donating.
Three additional blood drives will be held in April, as follows:
13 April – Constantia Office Park, from 10am to 3.30pm
14 April – Pick ‘n Pay The Falls Centre, from 10am to 3pm
21 and 22 April – Clearwater Mall from 9am to 4pm on both days
