Winter Olympics and Paralympics ahead in 2018
South Korea will play host to both the Winter Olympics and the Paralympic Games in February and March 2018.
Sports lovers can look forward to both the Winter Paralympics and the Winter Olympic Games in 2018.
The Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, will run from 9 to 25 February. The closing ceremony will take place on 25 February. This year, the host city for the Olympics will be Pyeongchang, South Korea. The elected host city was announced on 6 July 2011 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The Winter Paralympics will take place from 9 to 18 March, also in Pyeongchang.
DID YOU KNOW?
• The first Winter Olympics took place in 1924 in Chamonix, France. It’s said the event was a major success attracting more than 10 000 paying spectators. A total of 16 countries participated – more than 250 athletes, of which just 11 were women – in 16 events. The games then continued every four years thereafter but, then did not take place for 10 years between 1937 and 1947 due to World War II.
• The Winter Olympic Games resumed in 1948, with the fifth games, held in St Moritz, Switzerland, and continued every four years thereafter. There was just one exception between 1992 and 1998, when the games were held on three occasions namely in 1992, 1994 and 1998.
• The official Olympic website does not indicate whether South Africa has ever participated in an Winter Olympics.
