Things to do before your child goes to Grade 1
Your child will be ready for school in no time with these guidelines ...

First grade marks an important milestone for young children who finally feel part of ‘big’ school.
Children might be nervous about their first year in big school, but, with the following guidelines your child will be ready for school in no time.
• Research: Do some research about the school, their activities and the teachers, and share it with your child.
• Make sure your child is able to write his name and label all the items in his school bag. Remember that all clothes must be marked.
• Routine: Big school works on a timetable. Everything has its time and place and there are bells. This shift to a regular routine can be a big change for little ones used to a looser structure at home or at nursery school.
• Reassure your child. Spend time together before school commences talking about school, about your own love of learning and about the friendships that develop at school. Boost your child’s confidence by telling positive experiences and of all the things your child will enjoy about school.
Also show your child around the school so he does not feel too unfamiliar on his first day.
• Remember: Be supportive but also learn to let go. On the first day, give plenty of hugs and reassurance but also be balanced and let go.
