National Book Lovers Day

Sit back, relax and enjoy your favourite book on #NationalBookLoversDay

National Book Lovers Day is celebrated annually on 9 August and is a day created especially for all the bookworms.

Today you are encouraged to find a good book, be it fiction or non-fiction, settle down in your favourite reading spot and read the day away!

Let’s step back in time for a minute with some of these interesting facts about books:

– The very first books had pages made from vellum (calf skin) or parchment.

– Book covers were made of wood and often covered with leather.

– Books were fitted with clasps or straps.

– It was during the Middle Ages that the first public libraries appeared.

– To prevent theft of books in public libraries, the books were often chained to a desk or bookshelf.

Moving forward a few years, book manufacturing’s most recent developments include digital printing, where toner instead of ink is used to print book pages. The development of digital printing also opened up the possibility of printing on demand, where no books are printed until after an order is received from a customer.

The popularity of e-books (electronic books) is also rapidly increasing. An e-book is a book-length publication in digital form and is available through the internet. They can also be found on CD-Roms or in other forms. An e-book is either read on a computer or an e-book reader, such as a Kindle.

Reading can be informative and can broaden your general knowledge.

To celebrate, take your favourite book, relax and escape into the fantasy world of your imagination.
