It should go swimmingly

CONSTANTIA PARK – Swimming instructor says children must be taught how to swim to avoid tragedies.

Leaving your children to play around the swimming pool could lead to tragedy.

This according to Margret Healey, an experienced swimming instructor who encourages parents to teach or take their children for swimming lessons from a young age. The firm message comes shortly after the death of a two-year-old who drowned at her Olivedale home on 21 June.

Healey, who has been running her own swimming school for 20 years at Roodepoort Virgin Active, stressed the importance of swimming and explores different, easy techniques which could save a child’s life, whether in a swimming pool, river or dam.

“I encourage swimming, not just for enjoyment and general well-being, but also as a lifesaving tool. Children must be taught how to swim because they push each other in swimming pools and dams and off boats,” Healey urged.

One of her pupils is the two-year-old toddler, Kai Peters, who is becoming a better swimmer in each lesson.

“We teach underwater swimming at a young age, also different strokes and using your back which keeps you afloat and calms you down,” the coach said.

Lessons are also available for adults.
