Roodies Comrades send-off

Roodies send off their Comrades runners in style

There was a family-friendly vibe in the air as the Roodepoort Athletics Club hosted its annual Comrades send-off braai.

The purpose of the event was to wish the runners participating in the competition the best of luck. More than 50 runners from the club will be at the starting line in Durban for the 47th up run, starting outside the Durban City Hall at 5.30am and finishing 12 hours later at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.

Father and son duo Vincent and Vincent Meyer.

Some of the club’s members will be running under the Run 4 Ewan banner, to raise awareness for Pompe disease, a rare genetic disease. Runners will also be wearing blue ribbons to show their support.

The club is blessed to have mother and son, mother and daughter, father and son, and husband and wife teams that will be on the road to support each other. Members of the supporters’ club will also be in Durban with the runners to give them their full support and make sure they are taken care of.

Entries for this year’s Comrades closed three days before the deadline as the 20 000 entries cap had been reached.

Runners from more than 70 countries have entered the 92nd Comrades Marathon, although South African entries make up 91% of the total entry tally. International entries make up 7% and rest of Africa entries constitute 2%.
