The Ruimsig Athletics Stadium was the place to be as almost 1 000 up-and-coming sprint athletes took to the track on 1 February.

They were competing and showing off their talent in the Puma School of Speed competition. This was all for a chance to work with reigning SA 100m champion Henricho Bruintjies, who is the vice-principal, and Usain Bolt, who is the principal of the School of Speed, to help develop their sprinting talent.

The athletics development programme was enhanced by coaching and schools clinics taking place around the meets. The top young speedsters who excelled in their events will become part of Puma’s elite running ambassador programme. The meets are endorsed by athletics federations, and the times achieved count as official qualification for provincial and national championships.
This meet was the third event of the project, after the first and second legs, hosted by Pretoria and Cape Town respectively. Athletes in the U/16, U/18 and U/20 categories competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m events, and in the relay races.

The prize for the top 5 speedsters per meet, as determined by the Athletics South Africa points system, is a Puma product contract each to the value of R10 000 and the opportunity to become part of Puma’s elite running ambassador programme.
