Use electricity wisely and save

Follow these top tips from City Power to save electricity

Residents are urged to use electricity wisely during the holiday season to avoid situations where demand exceeds supply, and results in load shedding.

City Power, the City of Johannesburg’s electricity entity, is urging residents to save electricity to ensure the grid is not placed under unnecessary pressure and stays stable at all times.

To help residents to keep the lights on, they have offered the following tips:

Before leaving home for work or to go out for the evening, do a deliberate walk through of your home and check for the following:

– Switch off all lighting – especially outdoor security lights – not automatically controlled by a timer.

– When nobody is at home during winter, ensure all heaters are switched off – the same goes for air conditioners during summer.

– Electrical stoves should always be switched off – and should never be used as a heater during cold weather.

– All appliances that are plugged in and in their stand-by mode should be switched off at the plug. This applies to television sets, DVD and video machines, satellite receivers and microwaves.

When you are at home, you should ensure all lights are switched off in rooms that are not occupied. You can also save electricity by controlling the amount of hot water used around the house and fixing leaky pipes.

Electricity saving habits should not only be practiced at home, but at the workplace too.

– Check your habits when arriving at work. When you start switching on machines, ask yourself if it is really necessary for this machine to be switched on at the specific time. If the answer is “No” – do not switch it on.

– Start a new habit by using your lunch time to look for machines and appliances that do not need to be switched on – and switch them off for the rest of the day.

– All office staff should switch their office lights and air conditioning off when leaving the office for a meeting or to go to lunch.

It is important to remember to always do the following when leaving the office to go home – especially during weekends:

– Switch off all office and building lights not needed for safety or security reasons.

– All heaters and air conditioners should be switched off – to avoid causing discomfort, this can be done an hour before leaving.

– Your personal computer, copiers, printers, scanners, cell phone chargers, urns, coffee machines and warmers should be switched off at the plug.

Remember to always switch off unused appliances to save electricity and reduce demand.
