Florida DBC win Gino Cup

The Florida Dragon Boat Club are this year’s winners of the Gino Cup.

The annual dragon boat racing event which took place at Florida Lake is in honour of former Gauteng Dragon Boat Gino Feng. He was killed in 2007 after an attempted burglary at his home.

The event is hosted every in the month of May which is known as Dragon Boat Month.

In attendance for the opening ceremony was Sascoc president Gideon Sam, South African Dragon Boat Association Vincent Lin, Taiwan deputy ambassador Shih Cheng-Maw and Region C sports council president Aubrey Thomas.

“Dragon boat racing is a tradition we have celebrated in Taiwan for many centuries. I am happy that on such a beautiful day we can host such a competition,” said Shih Cheng-Maw.

The opening ceremony started with a beautiful dragon dance followed by an eye dotting ceremony.

A floral tribute to Gino before the competition started. Each club had to have a team participating in the Premier Mixed, Men’s, Women’s and B division.

There was also a Chinese division where Chinese teams raced against each other.

To win the Gino Cup, the club with the highest team victories in each division will be declared the winner.

The results are as follows:

Premier Mixed:

1st – Florida DBC

2nd – Spartans

3rd – EMS Cadets

Chinese Division:

1st –ATCC

2nd -Hakka

3rd -Taiwanese Embassy

Men’s Race:

1st-Florida DBC

2nd-Spartans

3rd-EMS Cadets

Women’s Race:

1st-Florida DBC

2nd-Spartans

3rd-Composite

B – Division:

1st-United Dragons

2nd-Leapfrog

3rd-Gliders
