New astro hockey field for Maragon

RUIMSIG - Maragon Private Schools aims to put West Rand hockey at a higher level with new astro hockey fields.

Hockey is still a growing sport at Maragon Private Schools but it’s something that the school wants to promote to the fullest.

Maragon hockey coach Craig O’Brien was delighted to announce that the school is currently constructing it’s first astro hockey field.

“The difference between a normal grass-based hockey field and an astro field is that the latter is artificial and more durable than a traditional field,” explains O’Brien.

According to him, the project will take four months to complete with construction having started at the end of June.

“This turf is going to be a bit different to traditional astro turfs because it will be split in half and will feature two fields in one. The reason for this is because we are now moving over to a five-a-side format with hockey that will need less space.”

Another advantage is that play will take place at a faster pace than the traditional style of hockey, and this should prove to be more entertaining to the crowds.

“Hockey is currently not that big in the West Rand and we are the only area that doesn’t have our own union, and that is something that we want to create by giving more pupils from the surrounding area a chance to play hockey at a higher level.”

The school will also be renting out the astro field to other schools and clubs, and O’Brien urges interested people to call him for more details.

“Following the great performance of our first team hockey girls at the Noord-Vaal Tournament, I feel that we can only grow bigger and better after the astro fields are completed.”
