Roodepoort Theatre: Become a rock star

Join the My Band Project for music knowledge, industry advice and the opportunity to win great prizes.

Through a press release the Record was informed that the My Band Project will be active at the Roodepoort Theatre from 5 February until 5 July this year.

This is an effort by Masim Majiza (director of Lunika Production) to realise his dream of helping the youth to get into the South African music industry. Majiza and Roodepoort Theatre marketing officer Nevolan Reddy gave the Record the details.

The My Band Project entails that six bands and six local DJs will be taken into a programme with a duration of six months. During their time, the bands will attend workshops by industry leaders to educate them in the business of music, and each will be expected to host one performance. According to the press release, the Theatre will allow them the use of the Basement Theatre as venue and assist them with marketing free of charge.

“I was inspired by bands that are young, are from different walks of life and don’t have formal training or industry education.

“I want to take a good band, one that’s probably been playing in the garage or with their friends, and give them the opportunity to play live in front of an audience.

“We should assist bands in the greater Roodepoort and Florida areas to enter the tough South African music industry.”

See the next print edition of the Record for details on how to enter.
