
The Lions Club is an international organisation with several branches that provide a variety of services for their communities.
There are 46 000 clubs in 206 countries with over a million members. Part of their mission is to empower volunteers to serve their community and meet humanitarian needs. Their motto is, “We serve”.
In 1917 American Melvin Jones helped form the Association of Lions Clubs. They held a convention in Texas in October of that year and created a constitution, by-laws and a code of ethics. Three years later it became an international organisation.
Lions Clubs provide a variety of community services such as fundraising for charities, collecting food and clothing to donate, and arranging bingo nights for the elderly. They try to provide a service each month.
The Helderkruin Lions Club often hosts a buddy day,where 150 pupils from Grades 8 to 10 are paired up with a mentally handicapped child and they spend the day together.
The Wilro Park Lions Club renovated the lounge at the Gateway Village last year and currently are renovating the bedrooms. They also host an annual charity cycle race.
Lions Clubs have a youth division, called Leo Club that instils a healthy attitude towards service in teens. Alphas are 12 to 18 years old, while Omegas are 18 to 30.
