Dear Editor

I enjoyed your editorial last week regarding the joy of being outdoors in spring, and it caused me to come out of my indoor hibernation to explore the park down the road from my new home.

Being a new resident in the area – and coming from Durban, where the winter weather is a fair bit more accommodating – I was reluctant to venture further than my garden, especially when the harsh Jo’burg winds were blowing. Yet over the weekend, the weather was temperate and the sunshine simply astounding. So on Saturday afternoon, I set out with my tekkies on and my faithful Jack Russell, Snowy at my side. “We’re off to the park.” I told Snowy, who was highly enthused by the idea having her lead attached to her collar.

To my utter amazement, I found a beautiful clean little park, well-kept and unpolluted, with the Klein Jukskei River babbling happily past a beautiful green river bank. Snowy thought she was in heaven when I took out her tennis ball, and we played catch while we giggled well into the afternoon.

Thank you for helping me see the beauty so close to home. I’m loving Jo’burg!
