The Roodepoort Station Precinct Upgrade was announced on 8 August in Roodepoort town hall by representatives of the two major role players in the project the Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa (Prasa) and the City of Johannesburg (CoJ).
The project will see a complete overhaul of the station which include the refurbishing of the old Station building to its former glory. This building is a 102 years old and regarded as a heritage building.
The project will include upgrade of the existing taxi rank to the eastern side of the station, development of pick up and drop off zones in front and to the western side of the station where the taxis are currently operating and the construction of a holding area to accommodate the displaced taxis from the front of the station. Parts of the new modern building will be double volume.
Furthermore the current pedestrian subway will be closed up and replaced wit an overhead bridge.
The project will happen in phases with the first phase still commencing this year. This phase will be the upgrade of the station itself. The next phase will be the upgrading of the taxi facilities.
