Without pedestrians face danger
A teenager's crash into a barrier in Weltevreden Park is still causing a safety risk to pedestrians, almost eight months later.
At the Without Street bridge, the barrier is blocking the pavement and pedestrians must walk in the street where vehicles pass.
Sector 2 chairperson Neville Burnett said cars also sped in Without Street with vehicles overtaking each other.
“Shortly before Christmas an ambitious teenager took his father’s BMW, without the necessary consent, of course. He went for a spin and lost control of the car and crashed into a barrier next to a stream. At least the reeds have been cut out since. But pedestrians cannot walk on the pavement so they face danger every time they have to cross this bridge,” he said.
Burnett added no pedestrians have been hit.
Earlier this year, Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin engaged with the Johannesburg Roads Agency about the barrier, without success.
The agency’s spokesperson, Sam Modiba, said the matter would need further investigation.
