Residents may answer to vagrants

Residents now have the power and ability to bring forward a solution concerning vagrants.

You as resident can now provide a long-term solution where the constant re-occurence of vagrants are concerned.

City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley said residents could sms suggestions about vagrants and it would be incorporated into the city’s strategies to address the growing concern of homelessness.

This follows after Roodepoort Northsider again came across vagrants at a greenbelt next to Wildebraam Street.

Sector 2 chairperson Neville Burnett said vagrants were a recurring problem.

When at the scene one of the four vagrants had a fire burning which Burnett told him to put out as it was not allowed.

Two others were sleeping, while another was washing clothes.

Vagrants keep on returning, he said. Moodley sent the Head of Park Rangers to visit the site and carry out a blitz operation.

“However, many of these operations do not offer long-term solutions as homelessness is a multi-entity responsibility and is often an on-going problem.

“I would like to hear from residents if they have any interim solutions for these complaints while the city’s Displacement Unit is registering indigent individuals living under very worrying conditions along open spaces.”

Moodley said residents could sms their suggestions as to how ensure there was a long-term solution, seeing a sustainable answer is needed. Details: 082-906-1515
