A 43-YEAR-old security guard employed at Super Spar Retail Crossing was fatally wounded during a shootout that occurred at the centre on 5 August.
According to communications officer at Honeydew Police Station, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs, the guard was on his way to the Retail Crossing on Hendrik Potgieter Road with an undisclosed amount of money, when he was ambushed by an armed group of men at the circle entering Retail Crossing.
“A single shot was fired which fatally wounded the security guard. The robbers then fled the scene with the money in a white hatch-back vehicle up Hendrik Potgieter Road,” said Jacobs.
A member of the public who witnessed the incident allegedly followed the robbers and lost track of them along the way.
A case of murder and armed robbery is being investigated by the Honeydew detective service.
