Rhinoceros Substation maintenance re-implemented
City Power has notified residents that even though planned maintenance was suspended during the lockdown, it was deemed necessary to conduct the Rhinoceros Substation maintenance, and as such, the planned power interruption has been re-implemented.
Community members who get their power from the Rhinoceros Substation received some good news on 27 March, but that has unfortunately been short-lived.
City Power has notified residents that even though planned maintenance was suspended during the lockdown, it was deemed necessary to conduct the Rhinoceros Substation maintenance, and as such, the planned power interruption has been re-implemented.
City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena said that unfortunately, this substation is in dire need of maintenance and it cannot wait any longer. The planned maintenance was initially scheduled for 15 March but needed to be postponed because of safety concerns during load-shedding. It was moved to 5 April and then suspended due to the lockdown.
This maintenance is deemed critical as the substation is very close to breaking down or blowing up. “We are running a very serious risk if we don’t do this maintenance,” said Isaac.
Isaac said that the critical need for maintenance comes from issues during one of the restorations when one of the feeder boards was damaged and they were unable to replace it at that time, so the substation is currently only running on one feeder board. By conducting this maintenance, City Power is ensuring an alternative supply of electricity, should something break down in the station again.
The maintenance will run from 7am to 3pm on Sunday, 5 April and will affect the following areas and businesses:
• Hillfox Power Centre
• Nedbank Lakeview Campus
• China Town
• Constantia Water Front
• Sanlam Property
• Constantia Com Business Park
• William Nicol Sanlam Centre
• National Blood Service
• Lakeview Office Park
• Constantia Motors
• Standard Bank
• Motor Town
• Constantia Commercial Park
• McCarthy Motors, Constantia Kloof
• Springhaas Road, Weltevredenpark
• Tortoise Street, Weltevredenpark
• Squirrel Turn, Weltevredenpark
The power could return at any point during the day, so all supply points to be treated as live at all times. City Power would also like to remind residents that this planned maintenance is subject to cancellation in the event of load-shedding on the same day.
