WATCH: Record journalist doing some top-rated relaxing activities during lockdown
I have found that some of these activities help me to stay calm and are really enjoyable.
When a state of emergency declared by President Cyril Ramaphosa was followed by the announcement of a national lockdown, the first thing I thought was, ‘Except for still working, what on earth am I going to do to stay busy?’
Knowing myself, I would not be able to sit at home every day without being able to go shopping or socialise. I needed something to occupy my mind. That was when the research part kicked in. I hopped onto Google to find ways to stay busy at home, and to relax and stay calm during this time.
The first thing that came up was to keep to a routine as much as possible, and still do some of the things you are used to doing every day. No, I did not draw up an hourly schedule of what to do every day and what time I need to start preparing for it.
With media being an essential service, every journalist is still working hard during the 21 days, even though it’s in the comfort (more like a pin cushion) of our own homes. I try to stay as close as possible to my work routine every day, and after finishing what needs to be done, I try to escape the current situation by doing something I truly like, and doing some of the activities that came up on my search.
I love to meditate; it is always a way for me to relax and just forget about everything else. I have also prepared activities such as colour therapy, changing the appearance of a room (they say a small change can make it feel like a new universe), staying active, reading a book from my favourite collection, and of course the me, myself and I dance party now and then, and making time for those close to you.
I have found that some of these activities help me to stay calm and are really enjoyable.
