Two drug dealers operating as hawkers were arrested following a joint operation by Honeydew Police and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) on Friday, 14 February.
The two were arrested during the operation which was aimed at addressing the issue of problematic hawkers within the Honeydew Sector 3 policing precinct.
During the Valentine’s Day ‘unpleasant’ visit, they impounded four illegal hawkers’ stands. The arrests came as a result of an intensive search of the stands. The first arrest was made between Hendrik Potgieter and Krugerrand Roads near the KFC circle. The second one was outside the Spar in Radiokop.
JMPD acting deputy director for Region C, Superintendent Wandile Mrubata told Northsider that the two suspects will be charged with dealing in dagga, and the hawkers’ merchandise was to be taken to the pound.
“The goods will be kept at the pound and the owners will be fined R1 600 to get their goods back,” he explained.
