2020 looks promising for local rapper

“In September of last year I bounced back by investing in my very own home recording and production studio,” he explained.

The trials and tribulations of 2019 have not set back Zandspruit’s-own hip hop sensation, Ishmael Sphamandla Masuku, affectionately known by his stage name, Ishmiza.

Having dropped his second studio album that didn’t live up to his expectations due to debacles at his label, Ishmiza told the Northsider that 2020 was the year to improve from the previous year’s tough lessons.

“2019 was one of the toughest years ever. I dropped (released) my second album but didn’t work out because of conflicts in my label. But I decided to leave the label after I felt I over worked myself for a label that only wanted to reap what I had sown,” he said.

The whole misfortune left the 22-year-old depressed; however, he managed to spin things around. “In September of last year I bounced back by investing in my very own home recording and production studio,” he explained.

Having returned to basics, he started developing ideas for the year 2020. “This year I just want to do better than all previous years. I want to grow my brand to be recognised nationwide, and on top of that drop more music and visuals,” the rapper envisioned.

This year he plans on diverting into Kwaito music and intends to feature two celebrities of his choice. “I’ve been working on my Kwaito album this year which is set to drop mid-year. I’ve been working with a variety of producers to get different sounds and ideas,” he said.

He explained that his Kwaito rap style is inspired by the likes of Zola, Mdu and the late Brown Dash, whom all are icons and pioneers of the genre.

To provide a glimpse of what’s to feature on his latest offering, Ishmiza announced that he’ll be releasing his first single for 2020 on 12 February. “I’m releasing this single for my fans to have a feel of what to expect in my full body of work,” an optimistic Ishmiza said.

In addition to a wonderful start of the year, he also announced that he has been nominated for Producer of the Year at the O11 Awards. The youngster is no stranger in triumphing in music competitions having won the Best Hip Hop Artist Award in 2016 at the Mogale City Music Awards. He also came short at the 032 Awards in 2018 after he was nominated for Best Kwaito Artist.

This determined musician is also a well-known figure in his community. While he hypes himself as an artist, Ishmiza also gives back to his community by hosting talent shows and hip hop sessions, and coaches soccer. He does all of this in a bid to steer the youth away from social ills.
