Free help available for depressed matriculants

The Department of Social Development has appealed to matriculants who feel depressed to make use of its Command Centre where they will receive counselling and support from trained social workers.

The release of the matric results usually leaves many matriculants with mixed emotions. Some celebrate their hard work while others are distressed by the outcome.

While society tends to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of the top achievers, those with disappointing results mostly feel left out as there is nothing for them to celebrate.

As such, reports of depression and suicide tend to be rife. The Department of Social Development has appealed to matriculants who feel depressed to make use of its Command Centre where they will receive counselling and support from trained social workers.

The Department also appealed to parents to look out for any signs of depression in their children so that interventions can be sought early to help the youngsters deal with their emotions.

The Command Centre can be reached toll free on 0800 428 428. Callers can also request a social worker from the Command Centre to contact them by dialling *120*7867# (free) from any cellphone.

Those with hearing impairments can also interact with the centre by using Skype. Just add ‘HELPMEGBV’ to their contacts and a social worker will accept the invitation and call them back.

The Department also reminded matric learners who not did succeed to opt for the Second Chance Matric Support Programme provided by the Department of Basic Education, which is available to support those who wish to use the second opportunity to sit for the exams.

To pursue this, learners are encouraged to register at their schools or District offices.
