Today in history: South African hip hop artist and poet is born

Tumi is described as a socially conscious poet, for his lyrics are often viewed as controversial and spark debate.

Boitumelo ‘Tumi’ Molekane was born in Tanzania on 16 August 1981 while his parents were living in exile.

In 1992, he was repatriated as a South African and became the lead vocalist of musical ensemble Tumi and the Volume, before the group disbanded in 2012.

Tumi is described as a socially conscious poet, for his lyrics are often viewed as controversial and spark debate.

He released a track titled POWA in 2012, which was about the condemnation of women abuse.

Tumi released the album Stogie T in 2016. The two hit singles from the album were Diamond Walk featuring rapper Nadia Nakai, and the second single from the album is called By Any Means featuring rappers Emtee and Yanga.

He was a judge on the first and second season of the television show The Hustle and also performed at the 2016 South African Music Awards.
