JMPD to visit malls near you

Hordes of Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers will soon be visiting a mall near you after launching their festive season safety campaign on Friday, 22 November

The JMPD officers will be dressed in full uniform but armed with educational material and smiles. They will make shoppers aware of their personal safety, and safety in malls, public spaces and on the roads. Community members will be encouraged to report any criminal activity.

According to JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, officers will also inform shoppers of JMPD’s three core functions, which are preventing crimes through visible policing and other crime-combating initiatives; enforcing certain city by-laws; and policing the roads to ensure that the rules of the road are obeyed.

“This is a multifaceted, largely operational campaign to create safety awareness, and ensure greater police visibility, tough enforcement and crime prevention throughout the city.

“JMPD will exhibit the EBAT breathalyser which gives a printout of the alcohol content of someone’s breath,” he said.

“A tracing facility will be available for motorists to check if they have outstanding fines. Officers of the Speed Unit will also demonstrate how the speed cameras function and the related delivery of speed fines through the post,” he added.

On the softer side of the engagements, the JMPD motorcycles will be on display for children to sit on or pose for photographs. Both the JMPD K9 and Equestrian Units will be on show for the public to look at the horses and dogs, find out what their capabilities are and how they are used.
