I read your article, Tips to save water in the Roodepoort Northsider, dated 8 November, with great interest.
I have been advocating the installation of water tanks for many years, saying, “If only 10 per cent of the population install tanks, we can save a considerable quantity of water during the summer months and conserve the water for the dry season”.
But, all my effort is rendered null and void due the municipality’s reluctance to cut the trees on the pavement. I first had to contend with the leaves that block the gutters followed by the flowers that block the down pipes and the seeds that also block the down pipes and filter medium. The cost of having the gutters, etcetera, cleaned far exceed the cost of municipal water.
That is not even including the pain experienced when stepping on the dropped seeds or seed-pods with a sharp protrusion, when going barefoot.
I have come to the conclusion that, in my case, the cost of the water conservation exercise far exceeds that of the cost of municipal water.
