The evening was started off with Greek music, dance and fireworks, followed by the extinguishing of the Olympic flame and lowering of the flag.

The overall winner of the 2004 Games was the United States of America with a total of 103 medals. Russia, with a total of 92 medals, was second and China, which was set to host the next Olympic Games in 2008, was third with 63 medals.

South Africa managed to win six medals, including one gold.

The president of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, praised Athens in his closing speech for the well organised Games.
