The courtship continues at the garden

The BEPR has had a problem before where a chick died of heat exposure.

Ever since the disappearance of Thulane and the sad death of Makatsa’s chick, things have been rather quiet at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden, where our famous eagle couple nests.

One cannot help but wonder if the chick was male or female, as it died too early for the Black Eagle Project Roodekraans (BEPR) to determine its sex.

According to the BEPR Chairman, Gerald Draper, “The remains of the eaglet have been taken for further studies and we will be able to tell if the eaglet was male or female very soon.”

Shane Wilken, one of the BEPR photographers, said in a Facebook post, “The courtship continues and the bond between Makatsa and the new eagle is looking very strong. Only time will tell if Makatsa will lay a new egg soon.”

Gerald said, “We are hoping that Makatsa does not lay an egg, as the timing will be completely off. The chances of a new chick surviving would be very slim because the eagles suffer more from the heat than the cold weather.”

The BEPR has had a problem before where a chick died of heat exposure.

It is expected that the BEPR will be giving the new male eagle a name in a few days’ time.

The BEPR will continue to monitor the situation and communicate as and when any developments unfold.
