NG Church Weltevreden goes bigger for Mandela Day
“We handed out soup, bread, beanies, scarves and gloves to about 100 less fortunate people in our community,” said Tanya Krause from the church.
What is Mandela Day without the involvement of the NG Church Weltevreden?
It has become a tradition for members of the church to give back to the community every Mandela Day, 18 July.
This is year was no different, as the church hosted another successful project in the spirit and commemoration of our beloved late South African President, Nelson Mandela.

The church reached out to community members who queued outside to receive various donated items on the day.
“We handed out soup, bread, beanies, scarves and gloves to about 100 less fortunate people in our community,” said Tanya Krause from the church.
Tanya could not be happier about the growth of the event. “Our event keeps growing. This is the third year of this specific project and we received more than 250 beanies and 160 scarves from our congregation this year. As part of our Winterhoop project, we also asked for donations of warm jackets and shoes, which have been handed out throughout winter to people who come to the church on a regular basis for food parcels,” she explained.

She added that the warm clothes that were left over were distributed to the community by church staff using the church bakkie on Mandela Day.
“We also dropped off a care package to the Weltevreden Park Clinic to thank the staff for the wonderful work they do. They were so surprised that some organisation would think of them on Mandela Day,” Tanya explained.
“NG Church Weltevreden’s motto is ‘Lewe vir die Stad’ which means ‘Live for the City’. By ‘city’ we don’t necessarily mean the CBD, for us it’s anywhere we work, play and get together with other people. We have a second motto – ‘We are blessed to bless others’ – and we really try to live up to that through all the wonderful projects led by our social worker, Alda Boer,” she concluded.
