Domestic worker’s forum needed for Sector 3
This follows a number of residential crimes taking place in the area, and domestic workers apparently being linked to some of the occurrences.
Honeydew Police Sector 3 manager, Captain Karen Jacobs, has expressed a need for a domestic workers’ forum in Sector 3.
This follows a number of residential crimes taking place in the area, and domestic workers apparently being linked to some of the occurrences.
In a recent Honeydew Sector 3 Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting, Jacobs urged the forum to form a forum for domestic workers, and suggested that the new acting chairperson, Tony Botes, should come up with ‘How to’ pamphlets for the workers.
According to Jacobs, the area has seen a big increase in residential break-ins between Tuesday and Thursday every week. “There are two sets of times; during the day and also during the night, particularly midnight to 4am,” she explained.
She concluded by sharing some tips with the homeowners:
o Ensure your panic button is working and is always close to you, and test the alarm at night.
o If your Stay alarm (the mode used when the owner is in the house) is not activated, make sure that the rest of house is.
o Test your panic buttons and their batteries and call your alarm company if they don’t work.
o Regarding alarms – there are two tips: firstly, you should have a duress code (a covert distress signal) on the panel. Secondly, if you are in the house and press the alarm or panic button, you should use the duress password/ number. A duress code will warn your security company that you are in trouble/ being forced to do something against your will.
o Homeowners need to mark gate motors with contact details and should save gate motor serial numbers as well.
o Complexes should register their gardeners and domestic workers with the guards on the gate, and have copies of their identity documents.
o Always close your windows – don’t leave them open for animals – it makes breaking-in easier, especially at toilet and kitchen windows.
