Local DJ aims for the big time
This upcoming star describes himself as a musician because of the many genres he can perform. These include hip hop and house music.
Twenty-four-year-old Collen Mashabela, better known as DJ Ozzie, from Zandspruit, is on a mission to grow his career in the entertainment industry.
Collen, who fell in love with music while in Grade 9 in 2011, is nothing less than a jack of all trades in the music industry since he does not limit himself to one specific genre.
This upcoming star describes himself as a musician because of the many genres he can perform, such as hip hop and house music.
His promising career saw him launch his first single, titled Uthando, in 2016. This single was produced by Goofey the Greatest. He said he then moved on to release his first Extended Play (EP), titled African Dream, which he worked on with the likes of Spookyflex and Corrupt Mind (all artists).
“I’ve worked with Spookyflex, whose real name is Mduduzi Dube, and many other artists in my career. My first house track was a good experience, but unfortunately my song, titled Phezkombhede, was stolen by famous artists after I produced and released it on my social media platforms,” said DJ Ozzie. “This caused a huge disturbance in my breakthrough into the industry.”
However, he did not allow the incident to diminish his dream to be a big artist, and continued to make more music. “I went on to work with other famous celebrities and recently dropped five singles on my SoundCloud and SlikourOnLife accounts,” he said.
He also mentioned that he has shared the stage with the likes of Cassper Nyovest, Siya Shezi and DJ City Lyts.
Apart from pursuing a career in music, DJ Ozzie has also tried his luck on our small screens. “I appeared on FanBase, an entertainment show on SABC1, while it was hosted by the late TV presenter, Akhumzi Jezile, and won the competition. I also went on to appear on Friends Like These, also on SABC1 and won a trip to Mauritius in 2017,” he boasted.
